Gran Turismo Concept Series

Posted in Gran Turismo Series on July 10, 2010 by gtindonesia

Concept Series released in years 2000 to 2002.

Format : PlayStation 2
Developer : Polyphony Digital.Inc
Publisher : Sony Computer Entertainment Incorporated
Genre : Racing / Driving
Release : 2000 – 2002

Shortly after Gran Turismo 3’s success, Polyphony Digital released Gran Turismo Concept 2002 Tokyo – Geneva. Gran Turismo Concept was pure arcade fun, featuring concept cars exclusive to this title. Gran Turismo Concept appealed to players who were overwhelmed by Gran Turismo 3’s lengthy career mode. Gran Turismo Concept went platinum nine months later and is still available at the budget price of $49.95.

Quote from computerandvideogames.com GTConcept Reviews

Every year the Tokyo Motor Show is host to a mind-boggling array of cool, weird or impractical concept cars from Japan’s otherwise staid mainstream motor manufacturers. Cars that often only exist as a fibreglass shell on some pretend wheels, but are designed to look like the real thing. The Gran Turismo team are enormous car fans, so they’ve chosen their favourites and made them work virtually in a snack-sized special edition of Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec.
The cash-earning hijinks of GT3’s Gran Turismo mode have been stripped out. Now, all you have to do is complete a hot lap on each course to unlock it for racing at Normal and Professional difficulties. Every time you earn a licence or win a race, you win a car. There are five tracks, with reverse variations, and 51 cars. So it’s not a massive game by any means, and this is reflected in the sub-20 quid price tag in Japan.

The sublime Skyline GTR concept is the game’s poster child, supported by the bike-engine Suzuki GTR/4 and the odd-looking but frighteningly rapid Mitsubishi CZ-3. Special mention must also be made of the Honda Dualnote, probably the first ever hybrid-fuelled car to star in a videogame. It has a regular V6 petrol motor, and an electric booster that loses power as you accelerate, but recharges if you brake hard. And then there’s the utterly bonkers Pod, a hi-tech collaboration between Sony and Toyota that has a wagging tail and mood lights, and gets into a vex when you drive the wrong way or stack it into a barrier.
There’s also a selection of brand-new Japanese production cars, including the thrilling new Nissan Primera, various Skylines, gratuitously rapid Mazdas and Hondas. You also get the stylish WiLL VS, part of the multi-media WiLL youth brand that encompasses beer and toothpaste, along with the usual round-up of touring and rally cars. It’s illegal for a Gran Turismo game not to contain a Subaru Impreza, so Gran Turismo Concept has at least three just to be on the safe side.

Gran Turismo Concept is a game for serious car buffs but is little more than a showcase for last year’s Tokyo motor show. Aside from the cars, there’s nothing you haven’t already seen in Gran Turismo 3, and experienced players will have it licked in a few hours. Cool as it is, that’s the killer flaw. Still, if you’re that much of a petrol-head then there’s no impenetrable Japanese text except for a few menu screens that can be understood with reference to a PAL copy of Gran Turismo 3: A-spec. It’s worth importing if you’re mad for cars, but that’s the only reason to consider getting it.
As it stands, Gran Turismo Concept won’t see a European release. Instead, Internet rumours persist of a special Western version later in the year. Considering some of the madness seen at the Geneva or Detroit shows, this could prove to be regular theme for Gran Turismo, especially if the upcoming PS2 hard disk can be used to incorporate add-on cars into the main game. But that could be just wishful thinking…
